Safety

One of these treatments carries an FDA boxed warning, the strongest warning on a label: low-dose oral minoxidil.

How online hair loss treatment works

Most online hair loss programs prescribe finasteride, either as a daily tablet or mixed with minoxidil in a topical spray. Results take months to show, so the monthly price and the terms matter as much as the formula. We compare both, and say which products are compounded.

You fill in a health questionnaire on the provider’s own site. A licensed clinician reviews it and decides whether a treatment is right for you. If you are prescribed, a licensed pharmacy ships it, and most providers renew the prescription on a subscription.

FDA-approved or compounded?

FDA-approved products, including generics, are made by their manufacturers to an approved standard. Compounded products are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual prescription, often to combine ingredients or change the form. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Topical finasteride and combined finasteride and minoxidil formulas are compounded and not FDA-approved.

What to look for in a provider

  • The monthly price for the treatment you want, and what it covers: the consult, refills and shipping.
  • A real clinical review. A licensed clinician should review your history before prescribing.
  • A licensed US pharmacy, and a clear statement of which products are FDA-approved and which are compounded.
  • Terms you can live with. Check the subscription length, how to cancel and what happens if you are not prescribed.

Questions, answered

What is the best hair loss treatment for men?

Oral finasteride is the prescription treatment FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss, and topical minoxidil is approved without a prescription. Many men use both. Compounded sprays and chews combine them, but they are not FDA-approved. Our ranked list above shows how each provider scores on price, care, treatment options, transparency and experience.

How much does finasteride cost online?

Taking each provider’s lowest regular monthly price, with any required membership, oral finasteride costs $17 to $38 a month, as of October 2026; promotional prices are counted at the price they return to. Several providers bill 2 or 3 months at a time. See our cheapest finasteride list.

Are online hair loss prescriptions legitimate?

Yes, when a licensed clinician in your state reviews your health history before prescribing and a licensed pharmacy fills the prescription. Look for LegitScript certification and a provider that says plainly which products are compounded.

Is topical finasteride safer than the pill?

Not proven. Topical finasteride is compounded and not FDA-approved, and on Apr 22, 2025 the FDA warned about reports of sexual and psychiatric side effects, many continuing after people stopped. See topical vs oral finasteride.

How long does finasteride take to work?

The label says daily use for 3 months or more is needed before you see a benefit, and most clinicians judge it at 12 months. If you stop, the effect reverses within about 12 months. See the Propecia label.

What are the side effects of finasteride?

In the 1 mg trials, more men on finasteride than on placebo reported lower sex drive (1.8% vs 1.3%), erection problems (1.3% vs 0.7%) and ejaculation problems (1.2% vs 0.7%). Reports since approval include sexual side effects that continued after stopping, and depression. Finasteride also lowers PSA by about half, so tell your doctor before a prostate test. See the Propecia label.
