Questions, answered
What BMI do you need for a GLP-1?
When the FDA approved Zepbound for weight management, it described the patients as adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. The other weight-loss GLP-1s were studied in the same groups. A clinician makes the final decision.
Can I get a GLP-1 with a BMI under 27?
Weight-loss GLP-1s are not approved for people below these thresholds. A clinician may consider other options. Be cautious with any program that prescribes without reviewing your health history.
Is BMI the only thing a clinician looks at?
No. They also review your medical history, current medications and conditions that rule a GLP-1 out, such as a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
