How online hair loss treatment works

Most online hair loss programs prescribe finasteride, either as a daily tablet or mixed with minoxidil in a topical spray. Results take months to show, so the monthly price and the terms matter as much as the formula. We compare both, and say which products are compounded.

You fill in a health questionnaire on the provider’s own site. A licensed clinician reviews it and decides whether a treatment is right for you. If you are prescribed, a licensed pharmacy ships it, and most providers renew the prescription on a subscription.

FDA-approved or compounded?

FDA-approved products, including generics, are made by their manufacturers to an approved standard. Compounded products are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual prescription, often to combine ingredients or change the form. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Topical finasteride and combined finasteride and minoxidil formulas are compounded and not FDA-approved.

What to look for in a provider

  • The monthly price for the treatment you want, and what it covers: the consult, refills and shipping.
  • A real clinical review. A licensed clinician should review your history before prescribing.
  • A licensed US pharmacy, and a clear statement of which products are FDA-approved and which are compounded.
  • Terms you can live with. Check the subscription length, how to cancel and what happens if you are not prescribed.

Questions, answered

How much does topical finasteride and minoxidil cost?

Providers on this page that publish a monthly price charge $63.20 to $75 a month, as of October 2026. Some bill per bottle or every 3 months, and Hone Health’s figure includes the monthly membership it requires.

Is topical finasteride FDA-approved?

No. The FDA says there is no FDA-approved topical formulation of finasteride, alone or combined with minoxidil. A compounding pharmacy prepares these products for individual prescriptions.

What did the FDA say about topical finasteride?

On Apr 22, 2025, the FDA alerted providers and consumers to 32 adverse event reports from 2019 to 2024, including erectile dysfunction, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, most continuing after stopping. It named compounders and telemedicine platforms that market these products and noted the risk of transfer to women.

Is a combined spray better than finasteride and minoxidil used separately?

That hasn’t been shown. A trial of oral finasteride with topical minoxidil found more regrowth than either alone (Hu et al., 2015), but compounded sprays that mix the two in one bottle haven’t been tested against separate products.

How do you use a finasteride and minoxidil spray?

As your prescription directs, usually once or twice a day on a dry scalp. Wash your hands afterwards and let it dry before skin contact, because finasteride can transfer to others, and women who are or may be pregnant shouldn’t touch it.

Do hair growth serums need a prescription?

Those containing finasteride do, because finasteride is prescription-only. Minoxidil alone is sold without a prescription at 2% and 5%.
