Safety

How online hair loss treatment works

Most online hair loss programs prescribe finasteride, either as a daily tablet or mixed with minoxidil in a topical spray. Results take months to show, so the monthly price and the terms matter as much as the formula. We compare both, and say which products are compounded.

You fill in a health questionnaire on the provider’s own site. A licensed clinician reviews it and decides whether a treatment is right for you. If you are prescribed, a licensed pharmacy ships it, and most providers renew the prescription on a subscription.

FDA-approved or compounded?

FDA-approved products, including generics, are made by their manufacturers to an approved standard. Compounded products are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual prescription, often to combine ingredients or change the form. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Topical finasteride and combined finasteride and minoxidil formulas are compounded and not FDA-approved.

What to look for in a provider

  • The monthly price for the treatment you want, and what it covers: the consult, refills and shipping.
  • A real clinical review. A licensed clinician should review your history before prescribing.
  • A licensed US pharmacy, and a clear statement of which products are FDA-approved and which are compounded.
  • Terms you can live with. Check the subscription length, how to cancel and what happens if you are not prescribed.

Questions, answered

What is the cheapest way to get finasteride online?

Generic finasteride 1 mg is one of the cheapest prescriptions online: not published a month for FDA-approved generic tablets at the providers on this page, as of October 2026, counting each one’s regular price rather than any promotion. Happy Head’s compounded finasteride capsule, which is not FDA-approved, is $17 a month. Check whether you pay for one month or three at a time.

Is cheap finasteride the same as Propecia?

Generic finasteride 1 mg tablets are FDA-approved generics of Propecia. Some providers sell finasteride in compounded capsules instead, which are not FDA-approved; each listing says which it is.

Does insurance cover finasteride for hair loss?

Usually not, because most plans treat hair loss as cosmetic. The providers on this page are self-pay, and at these prices insurance rarely matters.

Is finasteride cheaper on a longer plan?

Often. Some providers cut the monthly price for 3-, 6- or 12-month supplies: Happy Head charges $17 a month on a 12-month supply against $20 month to month. A longer supply also means paying more up front, so check the refund terms.

Is finasteride 1 mg the same as finasteride 5 mg?

No. Finasteride 1 mg (the dose in Propecia) is approved for male pattern hair loss, and 5 mg (Proscar) for an enlarged prostate. Hair-loss prescriptions use 1 mg a day.

How do I know if finasteride is working?

Shedding usually slows first. Take photos of your crown and hairline in the same light every 3 months; most clinicians judge the result at about 12 months.
