Safety

One of these treatments carries an FDA boxed warning, the strongest warning on a label: low-dose oral minoxidil.

Low-dose oral minoxidilPrescribed off-label
Boxed warning: minoxidil tablets contain a powerful blood pressure medicine that can cause serious side effects, including fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion, sometimes progressing to tamponade) and worsening angina. FDA label

Not medical advice. A licensed clinician decides whether a treatment is right for you; read the full prescribing information before you start.

How online hair loss treatment works

Most online hair loss programs prescribe finasteride, either as a daily tablet or mixed with minoxidil in a topical spray. Results take months to show, so the monthly price and the terms matter as much as the formula. We compare both, and say which products are compounded.

You fill in a health questionnaire on the provider’s own site. A licensed clinician reviews it and decides whether a treatment is right for you. If you are prescribed, a licensed pharmacy ships it, and most providers renew the prescription on a subscription.

FDA-approved or compounded?

FDA-approved products, including generics, are made by their manufacturers to an approved standard. Compounded products are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual prescription, often to combine ingredients or change the form. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Topical finasteride and combined finasteride and minoxidil formulas are compounded and not FDA-approved.

What to look for in a provider

  • The monthly price for the treatment you want, and what it covers: the consult, refills and shipping.
  • A real clinical review. A licensed clinician should review your history before prescribing.
  • A licensed US pharmacy, and a clear statement of which products are FDA-approved and which are compounded.
  • Terms you can live with. Check the subscription length, how to cancel and what happens if you are not prescribed.

Questions, answered

How much does oral minoxidil cost?

Providers on this page charge $20 to $69 a month, as of October 2026. Generic tablets cost less than compounded chews and gummies, and some prices are for a 90-day supply.

Is oral minoxidil safe for hair loss?

Minoxidil tablets carry a boxed warning for fluid around the heart and worsening angina at blood pressure doses. At hair-loss doses, a study of 1,404 patients found unwanted hair growth in 15.1% and lightheadedness in 1.7%, with no life-threatening effects. A clinician should review your heart history first. See oral vs topical minoxidil.

What dose of oral minoxidil is used for hair loss?

Low doses, usually 0.625 mg to 5 mg a day for men and 0.25 mg to 2.5 mg for women. That is far below the 10 mg to 40 mg a day the tablet label lists for severe high blood pressure.

Does oral minoxidil work better than topical?

Not clearly. In a 2024 randomized trial in men (Penha et al., JAMA Dermatology), low-dose oral minoxidil was not significantly better than 5% topical minoxidil after 24 weeks. Some people choose the pill because it is easier to use every day.

Who shouldn’t take oral minoxidil?

Anyone with pheochromocytoma, which the label rules out, and people with heart disease, low blood pressure or fluid retention should be assessed first. It isn’t recommended in pregnancy.

Do I need a prescription for oral minoxidil?

Yes. Minoxidil tablets are prescription-only, unlike topical minoxidil, and prescribing them for hair loss is off-label.
