Safety

One of these treatments carries an FDA boxed warning, the strongest warning on a label: low-dose oral minoxidil.

Low-dose oral minoxidilPrescribed off-label
Boxed warning: minoxidil tablets contain a powerful blood pressure medicine that can cause serious side effects, including fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion, sometimes progressing to tamponade) and worsening angina. FDA label

How online hair loss treatment works

Most online hair loss programs prescribe finasteride, either as a daily tablet or mixed with minoxidil in a topical spray. Results take months to show, so the monthly price and the terms matter as much as the formula. We compare both, and say which products are compounded.

You fill in a health questionnaire on the provider’s own site. A licensed clinician reviews it and decides whether a treatment is right for you. If you are prescribed, a licensed pharmacy ships it, and most providers renew the prescription on a subscription.

FDA-approved or compounded?

FDA-approved products, including generics, are made by their manufacturers to an approved standard. Compounded products are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies for an individual prescription, often to combine ingredients or change the form. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Topical finasteride and combined finasteride and minoxidil formulas are compounded and not FDA-approved.

What to look for in a provider

  • The monthly price for the treatment you want, and what it covers: the consult, refills and shipping.
  • A real clinical review. A licensed clinician should review your history before prescribing.
  • A licensed US pharmacy, and a clear statement of which products are FDA-approved and which are compounded.
  • Terms you can live with. Check the subscription length, how to cancel and what happens if you are not prescribed.

Questions, answered

What is the best hair loss treatment for women?

Topical minoxidil is the treatment FDA-approved for hereditary hair loss in women, as a 5% foam once a day or a 2% solution twice a day. Low-dose oral minoxidil and spironolactone are prescribed off-label. A clinician can help you weigh them against your health history and any plans for pregnancy.

How much does oral minoxidil cost for women?

Providers we track charge $20 to $69 a month for oral minoxidil, as of October 2026. Minoxidil tablets are approved only for severe high blood pressure, so using them for hair loss is off-label, and the tablet label carries a boxed warning.

Does spironolactone work for hair loss in women?

The evidence is limited. In one open study of 80 women on spironolactone or cyproterone acetate for at least a year, 44% had regrowth and 44% saw no clear change, with no placebo group. Spironolactone needs potassium checks and must be avoided in pregnancy. Providers here charge $42 to $59 a month.

Can women take finasteride?

Finasteride is FDA-approved for men only, and in a 12-month study of 137 postmenopausal women the tablet showed no improvement over placebo. Some providers offer it to postmenopausal women in compounded topical blends, which are not FDA-approved. Women who are or may be pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets.

How long does minoxidil take to work for women?

The Drug Facts labels say results can take 2 to 4 months of regular use, and many people shed more hair in the first few weeks before regrowth starts. Keep using it: the effect fades within months of stopping.

Can I use hair loss treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Talk to a clinician first. Finasteride and dutasteride must not be used in pregnancy, spironolactone should be avoided, and minoxidil isn’t recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding.
