In short
- No. Viagra, generic sildenafil and the three other FDA-approved ED pills (tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil) are prescription-only in the US.
- The FDA says male enhancement supplements and ED products sold online and in stores are likely to contain dangerous hidden ingredients.
- An online visit with a licensed clinician is legal, often reviewed within about 24 hours, and free at most providers we checked.
- Generic sildenafil cost $1.60 to $6.25 a dose online on October 18, 2026.
- For premature ejaculation, numbing sprays and creams with lidocaine or benzocaine can be sold over the counter under an FDA monograph.
No. In the US, Viagra and its generic, sildenafil, need a prescription, and so do the other FDA-approved ED pills: tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil and avanafil (Stendra). Drugs@FDA lists Viagra’s marketing status as prescription, and no over-the-counter version is approved.
What you can buy without a prescription are supplements and “male enhancement” pills, which the FDA warns are likely to contain hidden drug ingredients. The legal shortcut is an online visit with a licensed clinician, which most providers review within about a day. Here is why the prescription exists, what the store-shelf products are, and the quickest legal route.
Why ED pills need a prescription
ED pills are safe for most men, but not for everyone. The Viagra label says sildenafil must not be used by anyone taking nitrates in any form, such as nitroglycerin for chest pain or “poppers”, or riociguat, a lung medicine, because together they can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It also says:
- a clinician should check that your heart is healthy enough for sex;
- men on alpha-blockers should start at a low dose;
- some HIV and antifungal medicines raise sildenafil levels, so the dose must be cut;
- an erection lasting more than 4 hours, or sudden loss of vision or hearing, needs urgent care.
The Cialis label adds that an evaluation of ED should include a medical assessment to find possible underlying causes. The prescription step is where a clinician checks these things before you take the drug.
The four approved ED pills, all prescription-only
| Drug | Brand | Status on Drugs@FDA |
|---|---|---|
| Sildenafil | Viagra (Viatris) | Prescription; generics also prescription |
| Tadalafil | Cialis (Eli Lilly) | Prescription; generics also prescription |
| Vardenafil | Levitra, Staxyn (Bayer) | Brands discontinued; generic tablets prescription |
| Avanafil | Stendra | Prescription; a generic is listed on DailyMed |
Cialis and Stendra are listed as prescription drugs, like Viagra. Any pill sold in a gas station or supplement aisle as an ED treatment is none of these.
What is sold over the counter
Male enhancement supplements
Pills sold as “natural Viagra”, male enhancement or stamina products are not FDA-approved ED drugs. The FDA says such products, sold online and in stores, are “likely to be contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients”, and that they pose a serious health risk and are not guaranteed to work. A hidden, unlabeled dose of an ED drug is especially dangerous for men on nitrates, who would not know to avoid it.
Numbing sprays and creams for premature ejaculation
For premature ejaculation, which is a different problem from ED, some products are legal over the counter. Under the FDA’s monograph for external analgesics (21 CFR part 348), lidocaine sprays and benzocaine creams may be sold as male genital desensitizers. They can numb a partner too if not used as directed. Our premature ejaculation treatment page explains the prescription options.
Pills sold “without a prescription” online
Websites that sell sildenafil or tadalafil with no prescription and no health questions are not a legal route in the US. Their products may be counterfeit or contain the wrong dose. The FDA’s BeSafeRx program links to a tool for checking that an online pharmacy is state-licensed.
What about ED chewables?
Chewable and dissolving ED tablets from telehealth providers also need a prescription. They are compounded: a pharmacy prepares them for an individual patient, and they are not Viagra or Cialis, not generics of them, and not FDA-approved. On September 9, 2025, the FDA sent BlueChew a warning letter over claims that implied its chewables were the same as FDA-approved drugs. See compounded ED chewables.
The fast legal route: an online visit
An online visit replaces the trip to a doctor’s office for most men. It usually takes a few minutes:
- Fill in a health questionnaire about your erections, your heart, your blood pressure and your medicines.
- A licensed clinician reviews it, often within about 24 hours. Some states require a short video call.
- If it is safe for you, the prescription goes to a licensed pharmacy, which ships it.
Some providers ask for more. Lemonaid Health needs a recent blood pressure reading, which you can get free at a participating pharmacy. Hone Health starts with a lab test and a physician video visit. Delivery takes from about 2 business days at Strut Health to 8 to 10 business days at Henry Meds. Our guide to getting Viagra online legally walks through each step.
How to tell a legitimate online provider
A legal online ED provider has a few things in common:
- It asks about your health and medicines before anything is prescribed, and a licensed clinician makes the decision.
- The medication ships from a licensed US pharmacy, and the provider tells you whether a product is FDA-approved or compounded.
- It publishes its prices and its refund and cancellation terms.
Many display LegitScript certification, a third-party program that checks online healthcare companies against licensing and pharmacy rules; it isn’t a rating of the care. Every ED provider we rate has a clinician review your health before prescribing; see our ED rankings.
How fast the legal route is
Speed is often the reason men look for pills over the counter. The online route is usually quicker than booking a clinic visit:
| Provider | Review | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Lemonaid Health | Usually within 24 hours | Free shipping; time not stated |
| BlueChew | Usually within 24 hours | Ships within 24 hours if approved |
| Strut Health | Physician review of a questionnaire | Typically within 2 business days |
| Rex MD | Online questionnaire; call or video in some states | Ships within two days |
| MangoRx | Within 1 to 5 business days, depending on state | Free shipping |
| Henry Meds | Online appointment | 8 to 10 business days after the visit |
Times are as each provider states them on its own site. A provider that needs more information, such as a blood pressure reading or labs, will take longer.
What it costs with a prescription
A prescription doesn’t have to be expensive. On October 18, 2026, the online providers we checked charged:
| Option | Price |
|---|---|
| Online visit | Free at most providers; $25 one-time at Lemonaid |
| Generic sildenafil | $1.60 to $6.25 a dose |
| Generic tadalafil, as needed | $3 to $7.25 a tablet |
| Brand-name Viagra | $96 to $139 a dose |
Strut Health had the lowest sildenafil price, $1.60 a dose at 25 mg, with the consult and shipping included. See where generic sildenafil is cheapest.
The bottom line
You can’t buy Viagra or any FDA-approved ED pill over the counter in the US. Supplements sold in its place are not ED drugs and, the FDA warns, are likely to hide real drugs. An online visit with a licensed clinician is legal, quick and usually free, and generic sildenafil cost $1.60 to $6.25 a dose online as of October 2026.
